How this calculator works
A retaining wall is one of the most quote-varied projects in the yard, because so much of the cost is buried — literally. This tool prices the whole system, not just the visible face.
What the per-square-foot rate includes
The installed ranges cover excavation, a compacted gravel base, the wall material itself, drainage stone and pipe behind the wall, and backfill. That hidden half matters: the base and drainage are what keep a wall standing, and they’re a big reason quotes differ. Timber is the budget option with a 15–25 year life; segmental concrete block is the residential workhorse; poured concrete and natural stone cost more and last longest.
Height changes more than size
Cost is priced per square foot of wall face (length × height), but height also changes the engineering. Once a wall retains more than about 4 feet of soil, most areas require an engineered design and permit, and the wall needs deeper embedment and heavier reinforcement — so a 6-foot wall costs meaningfully more per square foot than two 3-foot terraces. If your slope allows it, terracing two shorter walls is often cheaper and greener.
Where DIY makes sense
Switch to DIY for materials-only pricing. Stackable block walls under about 3 feet are a legitimately popular weekend-warrior project; the work is simple but heavy. Anything taller, engineered, or holding back a driveway is professional territory — failure isn’t a cosmetic problem when a wall lets go. Planning the patio it’ll frame too? 2026 installed retaining wall cost per square foot of wall face
Per square foot of wall face (length × height), including excavation, base, drainage, and the wall. Timber is the budget pick; natural stone tops the range.
| Option | Low (per sq ft of wall face) | High (per sq ft of wall face) | Typical (per sq ft of wall face) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pressure-treated timber | $15 | $35 | $25 |
| Concrete block (SRW) | $20 | $45 | $30 |
| Poured concrete | $30 | $60 | $42 |
| Natural stone | $25 | $75 | $45 |

Frequently asked questions
How much does a retaining wall cost in 2026?
Most residential walls run $20–$45 per square foot of wall face installed for concrete block, $15–$35 for timber, and $25–$75 for natural stone. A typical 40-foot, 3-foot wall lands around $2,400–$5,400 in block before state adjustments.
Why are retaining walls priced by square foot of face?
Because cost scales with both length and height — a wall twice as tall needs more block, more base, and more backfill per foot. Multiply length by height to get the face area, then apply the per-square-foot rate. The calculator does this for you.
Do I need an engineer or permit for my wall?
Usually yes once the wall holds back more than about 4 feet of soil — many jurisdictions require an engineered design and a permit above that height. Walls supporting a driveway, structure, or steep slope may need engineering even when shorter. Check local rules before you build.
What makes retaining walls fail?
Water, almost every time. A proper wall has a compacted gravel base, drainage stone and a perforated pipe behind it, and weep paths for water to escape. Skipping the drainage to save money is the classic mistake — the soil swells, pressure builds, and the wall leans within a few seasons.
Can I build a retaining wall myself?
Short garden walls under 3 feet in segmental block are a realistic DIY — the blocks stack like heavy Lego on a gravel base. Switch the toggle to DIY for materials-only pricing. Taller walls, poured concrete, and anything engineered belong with a pro; the digging and material handling alone are punishing.
Disclaimer: Estimates are for planning only and reflect typical ranges, not quotes. Actual costs vary with site conditions, design complexity, local permits, and contractor availability.
