How this calculator works

Artificial turf is the inverse of most yard projects — almost all of the cost is upfront, and almost none comes after. This tool prices the upfront honestly.

What’s under the grass

The installed ranges include the part nobody sees: excavating a few inches of soil, building a compacted aggregate base, weed barrier, then the turf with seams, infill, and edging. That base is the difference between a lawn that stays flat and drains for 15 years and one that wrinkles in two. It’s also why the turf grade — economy to premium pet-rated — moves the price less than people expect; the groundwork costs the same either way.

The payback math

Against real sod, turf costs several times more on day one and close to nothing afterward — no mowing, water, or fertilizer. Where water is expensive or grass simply won’t grow, the crossover commonly lands in the 5–8 year range. The calculator’s DIY toggle shows the materials-only number if you’re supplying the sweat.

Grade notes

Economy turf suits low-traffic and rental situations. Mid-grade is the residential standard — realistic blades, good UV warranty. Premium / pet-rated adds drainage and antimicrobial infill that dog owners should consider non-negotiable. Whichever grade, ask for the manufacturer’s UV warranty in writing; fading is the failure mode that cheap turf hides until summer two.

2026 installed artificial turf cost per square foot

Installed prices include excavation, compacted base, weed barrier, turf, seams, infill, and edging. The turf material alone is only $2–$8 per square foot — the base and labor are the bigger half.

Option Low (per sq ft) High (per sq ft) Typical (per sq ft)

Frequently asked questions

How much does artificial turf cost in 2026?

Installed synthetic grass typically runs $6–$20 per square foot depending on grade, so a 500 sq ft lawn lands around $4,500–$7,000 at mid-grade before state adjustments. It's a big upfront number that competes on the years of mowing and watering it eliminates.

Why is installation so much more than the turf itself?

The turf roll is maybe a third of the job. Underneath it goes real construction — digging out several inches of soil, building and compacting an aggregate base, weed fabric, seaming, infill, and edging. That base work is what keeps turf flat and draining for 15 years, and it's where the labor lives.

Is artificial turf worth it versus real sod?

Turf costs roughly 5–10× sod upfront but near-zero upkeep after — no mowing, watering, or fertilizing. In dry climates with watering bills (or for shaded yards where grass refuses to grow), it commonly pays back in 5–8 years. If you love the feel of real grass, no spreadsheet will change that.

What's different about pet-rated turf?

Pet systems use shorter, denser fibers, antimicrobial infill, and a more permeable backing with extra base drainage so odors rinse through instead of lingering. That's most of the premium-tier price. For dogs, it's worth specifying — retrofitting drainage later is expensive.

Can I install artificial turf myself?

A small, square area is DIY-able — the toggle shows materials-only pricing. The unforgiving parts are base compaction (rent a plate compactor) and seams, which telegraph every mistake forever. Big lawns, curves, and pet systems are worth a pro crew.
