How this calculator works
A paver patio’s price is mostly two things: the unit you choose and the base underneath it. This calculator handles both, then adjusts for where you live.
What’s in the per-square-foot number
The installed ranges include the parts you don’t see: excavation, a compacted gravel-and-sand base, edge restraints, and the joint sand that locks everything together — plus the pavers and the labor to set them. That hidden base is why a paver patio costs more than a plain slab, and why cutting corners on it is the most common regret.
Dialing in your site
Two toggles move the number for real-world conditions. Slope / poor access adds prep cost per square foot for extra excavation, regrading, or hauling materials to a hard-to-reach yard. A decorative border adds a modest premium for the extra cutting and edge work. Switch to DIY and you’ll see materials only — realistic if you’re willing to rent a compactor and put in the weekends, since the base labor is the bulk of a pro’s bill.

Frequently asked questions
How much does a paver patio cost in 2026?
Most paver patios land between $10 and $32 per square foot installed (premium stone and porcelain can run higher), so a 300 sq ft patio commonly runs $3,000–$9,600 depending on the paver and your site. Concrete pavers anchor the low end; natural stone and porcelain the high end.
Why are pavers more expensive than poured concrete?
A paver patio is more labor — excavation, a compacted gravel-and-sand base, hand-set units, edge restraints, and joint sand. You're paying for that base and handwork, but you also get a surface that won't crack like a slab and that you can lift and repair one paver at a time.
Can I install a paver patio myself?
Yes, and it's one of the more achievable hardscape DIY jobs — but the base is everything. Skimping on excavation and compaction is why DIY patios heave and dip. The DIY estimate here is materials plus a small extras allowance; budget for a plate compactor rental and a few hard weekends.
What adds to the price?
Difficult access, a sloped or soft-soil yard, decorative borders, intricate patterns, and curves all add labor. This tool lets you flag slope/poor access and a border so the estimate reflects them. Steps, seat walls, and fire pits are separate add-ons.
How long does a paver patio last?
Properly based, a paver patio lasts decades — often 25+ years — and individual pavers can be swapped if one cracks or stains. Re-sanding the joints and the occasional sealer coat are the only real upkeep.
