Where paver patios pull ahead

Three real advantages that aren’t about price:

1. Individual unit repair. A paver patio is a rug made of stones — pull one out, drop a new one in. Tree root pushed up the corner? Lift the affected pavers, regrade the base, re-lay. Stained from a tipped grill? Replace that one paver, no patch lines. Spilled concrete from a separate job? Same thing. This quietly compounds: in 15 years a paver patio that’s been re-leveled twice still looks original; a concrete patio with two patches looks patched.

2. Freeze-thaw tolerance. Pavers flex independently — each unit can shift a fraction of an inch as the soil heaves in winter and settles in spring. Concrete is rigid, so it cracks at stress points instead. In hard freeze country (Minnesota, upstate New York, mountain states), well-built pavers consistently outlast concrete on the same site.

3. Drainage that doesn’t fight your yard. Water passes through paver joints into the gravel base and from there into the soil — your patio is permeable. Concrete is a sealed lid. On flat lots and near building foundations, that’s an actual problem; concrete creates standing water and routes runoff toward places it wasn’t supposed to go. Permeable pavers genuinely fix this without separate drainage work.

Where concrete still wins

1. Budget. Standard broom-finish concrete is $6–$12 per square foot. Almost no patio surface beats that. For a back-of-the-yard utility patio where the BBQ goes and no one cares about aesthetics, concrete is the right call and it’s not close.

2. Furniture stability. Pavers can shift over the years; on an old paver patio you’ll notice the chair legs no longer sit perfectly flat. On concrete, the surface stays where it was poured forever — chairs, tables, planters all sit dead-level. For setups where stability matters (outdoor dining table with stemware, a pool table on the patio), this is real.

3. Wheelchair / mobility access. A perfectly flat concrete pour is more friendly to wheels than even the best paver job. Joint lines on pavers are small but they exist, and they accumulate; for accessibility-critical patios concrete is the safer answer.

4. Pure modern aesthetics. Polished concrete and broom-finish gray have a clean, minimalist look that pavers can’t really replicate. If your house’s architecture is modernist or contemporary, broom or polished concrete reads “right” and pavers may read “fussy.”

A paver patio is the friendliest large hardscape DIY project there is — the work is moving material and being patient with leveling, neither of which requires specialized skill. A 300 sq ft paver patio is two long weekends of effort and a $2,500-ish materials bill. Mess up the base prep and the patio settles, but you can re-do sections.

A concrete patio is not a forgiving DIY project. Concrete arrives in a truck, gets poured, and you have hours to screed, finish, and trowel before it sets. Mess up the finish and it’s the finish you live with; mess up the slope and water pools at the door forever. The cost savings on DIY concrete are real ($2 per sq ft on materials vs $6–$12 installed), but the failure rate is real too. If you’ve never poured concrete, hire it out.

Which lasts longer?

Both last 25+ years installed correctly. The difference is how they age. Concrete eventually cracks — when it does, you patch it or live with it. Pavers shift and settle over time, but individual stones can be lifted, re-leveled, and re-laid. Pavers also handle freeze-thaw better because each unit flexes independently, where concrete is rigid and cracks at stress points.

Can I repair a paver patio more easily than concrete?

Yes, significantly. A cracked or stained paver can be lifted and replaced in 15 minutes; a cracked concrete slab usually needs sawing, partial demolition, or full resurfacing. If a tree root pushes up under your patio, pavers can be lifted and re-laid; concrete has to be cut and re-poured.

Which is better for drainage?

Which is more comfortable underfoot in summer?

Light-colored pavers stay noticeably cooler than dark concrete in direct sun — important for bare feet around a pool or grill.
