How this calculator works
A gate is priced as its own thing because it’s where a fence’s hardware and labor concentrate. This tool builds the estimate up from a standard walk gate.
How the estimate builds up
The base price is a single, roughly 4-foot walk gate, installed, in your chosen material. From there:
- Driveway / double gates apply a multiplier — they’re bigger, heavier, and need stronger posts and hardware.
- Width beyond the 4-foot base adds cost per extra foot.
- An automatic opener adds a wide range on top, since operators vary from a simple solar swing arm to a hardwired slide gate with keypad and sensors.
Everything is then scaled by your state’s labor-driven cost index, and you can switch to DIY for materials-only pricing.
The part that actually fails: the post
Whatever gate you buy, its long-term behavior comes down to the post it hangs on. Gate posts carry a swinging load that line posts don’t, so they need to be set deeper and in more concrete. Most “my gate sags and won’t latch” problems are really a post that moved. Build the gate posts heavier than the rest of the fence and you’ll avoid the single most common gate complaint. 2026 installed cost for a standard walk gate (~4 ft)
Base prices are for a single ~4 ft walk gate. A driveway/double gate, extra width, and an automatic opener each add to the total in the calculator.

|---|---|---|---|
| Chain link | $130 | $400 | $260 |
| Wood | $250 | $600 | $400 |
| Vinyl | $300 | $750 | $480 |
| Ornamental metal (steel/aluminum) | $350 | $900 | $580 |

Frequently asked questions
How much does a fence gate cost in 2026?
A standard single walk gate runs about $130–$400 installed for chain link, $250–$600 for wood, $300–$750 for vinyl, and $350–$900 for ornamental metal. Driveway gates and automatic openers cost substantially more.
How much does a driveway gate cost?
A manual double driveway gate is roughly two-and-a-half times a single walk gate of the same material, plus more for extra width — often $1,000–$3,000 installed. Add an automatic opener and the total commonly climbs another $1,000–$3,000 depending on swing vs. slide, solar power, and access controls.
What does an automatic gate opener add?
Expect roughly $1,000 to $3,000 on top of the gate for the operator, depending on whether it swings or slides, whether it's hardwired or solar, and what access controls (keypad, remote, intercom) you add. Heavier and wider gates need stronger — and pricier — operators.
Can I install a gate myself?
A manual walk gate is a very doable DIY — it's mostly hanging hardware on solid posts. Switch to DIY for materials-only pricing. Automatic openers and heavy driveway gates are another matter — they involve heavier posts, electrical, and safety sensors, and are usually worth professional installation.
Why does my gate sag or not latch?
Almost always the post, not the gate. Gate posts carry a swinging load and must be set deeper and in more concrete than line posts. Sagging is usually a post that has shifted or a gate that needs an anti-sag cable; a latch that won't catch usually means the post moved. Build the posts right and most gate problems disappear.
